Argo boys look for finishing touch

Argo’s glass could be half-full or half-empty.

The Argonauts were 11-14 after falling to Sandburg and have earned double-digit wins for the first time since 2016.

But that record could have been better. Argo had dropped three of four games despite holding leads in each game. Coach Pat Maietta said that’s been a theme for this year’s group.

“We have to work together,” Maietta said. “We have had a lead in every game. In every game we lost, we had a lead.”

The Argonauts have been without senior forward Jayvon King since mid-January, which doesn’t help.

“We miss Jayvon King’s leadership because he was that glue for us on the defensive end making sure the right guy got the right shot,” Maietta said.

Maietta hopes during this final stretch his players come together and not rush key situations.

“We just have to trust each other and not think we have to do it ourselves,” Maietta said. “We have to work together to make the best play and we’ve been working on that all year.”

Junior forward Darron Greer Jr. had a game-high 28 points (21 in the first half) against Sandburg. Also stepping up was Kassam Saleh who finished with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

Saleh is a four-year varsity player for the Argonauts.

“He competes,” Maietta said. “ He’s undersized but when he’s shooting and it’s going in, we are probably going to win.

“I look to him for leadership sometimes too much but he’s a great kid and his teammates love him.”

Filling in for King has been junior guard Kentrell Lee.

“He’s a heck of a on-ball defender and a good ball handler for us,” Maietta said. “He’s stepped up.”
