Some know him as Connor Gleason but around the Sandburg boys basketball team he’s known as “Captain.”

Eagles coach John Daniel names a captain before the season tips off to help out during the summer and the lead-up to the season to help prepare the younger players.

“He was put in the leadership role June 1st, and that carries into the season,” Daniel said. “He’s a great captain. Great leader.”

Gleason appreciates his role in his final high school season

“It’s bittersweet,” he said. “I just love being a good teammate and around these guys.”

Gleason grabbed a key rebound and hit some free throws that sealed Sandburg’s 54-47 home win over Argo on Feb. 1.

“He does not always score points,” Daniels said. “But he’s always consistent, whether it is 10 or 12 points, and like six rebounds, as well as gets big defensive stops.”

Gleason finished the game with 13 points including two 3-pointers to go with three steals and four rebounds.

He is an active member of the Sandburg SuperFanz group. The group creates themes for games and helps boost attendance at various events, especially sporting events.

Whether it is off or on the court, he tries to be supportive of his fellow Eagles.

“We have such a young team,” Gleason said. “I am trying to be a good influence on them and help them become better men, and ultimately play together and win games as a team.”

“You could see the emotion in our players,” Daniels said. “He knows how to walk on the court and calm them down.”

Sandburg also had 22 points from Will Johnson.

Gleason is not satisfied but feels this Eagles group is the perfect mix of talent to accomplish anything in front of them. They play four of their final games at home.
