Crete Village Board’s meeting last week might be one of the shortest on record. In a session that lasted just 30 minutes, trustees approved the Consent Agenda, heard comments from the public, got some praise and thanks for help with Country Christmas, and listened to officials’ reports.

The Consent Agenda included three routine items: Approval of the Minutes and bills from the January 13 meeting, and ratification of the payroll ending January 22.

During Citizens Speak, Jamie Healy, Crete Area Chamber of Commerce Vice President, told the board the Chamber will sponsor a candidate forum for the upcoming April election on March 3. The Consolidated Election on April 1 will include the election of a village president, three trustees, and the village clerk. The only contested village election concerns the trustees, with four candidates for three four-year terms.

The April 1 ballots also will include Crete Township positions, for supervisor, clerk, and assessor – all unopposed.

Schools, parks, libraries, fire protection districts, and the Regional Office of Education also will elect officials, and area referenda will be decided by voters.

Meanwhile, Healy also said, during the Crete Village Board meeting last week, that the Chamber was slated to host a ribbon cutting for Bella Medical on February 1.

During officials’ reports, Trustee Katrina Seifert reported interviews are ongoing for the open Front Office Clerk position. Trustee Holly Milburn reminded the board about upcoming Special Olympic events. She said the police/fire Unified Basketball Game will be held on February 25, at 6:30 p.m., while the annual Polar Plunge will be on March 1. Clerk Deborah Bachert reported she attended a liquor hearing earlier that day for Jemma’s Slots, which will have an ownership change in mid-February.

In the communications segment of the meeting, a thank you letter was received from Carol Millsap, president of the Crete Country Christmas committee. She cited the village “for their hard work and financial contributions” toward the popular event.

There was no Old Business, New Business, or an Executive Session, and the meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
