A Palos Hills resident lost $4,000 in a phone scam after receiving a fraudulent text message from someone posing as an Apple representative, police said.
The incident occurred on Jan. 6 when the victim was notified of supposed suspicious activity on their Apple account. Following the scammer’s instructions, the resident sent $4,000 via Athena Bitcoin to resolve the alleged issue. When the scammers requested an additional $14,000, the resident realized the deception and contacted police.
Authorities are investigating the case as a deceptive practices incident and urge residents to remain vigilant against similar scams.
