Seniors in the Township of Lyons now have a new way to travel, thanks to a recently purchased bus aimed at meeting their transportation needs.
The township board approved the acquisition of a 2024 Ford E-350 passenger bus for $107,694 from Southern Bus & Mobility in downstate Breese.
The vehicle, designed to accommodate 10 passengers and one wheelchair, is already in high demand, according to Trustee Colleen Kelly.
“Exciting news here, they’ve got their new bus,” Kelly, who oversees the senior transportation program, said at the board’s December meeting.
The new bus has room for 10 seats along with one wheelchair.
That gives the township four buses for seniors.
Noting that January and February are nearly booked solid, with rides, Kelly said “the new bus is getting a workout.”
“I see them everywhere,” Kelly said of the senior buses.
“(The seniors) rave about them. It’s just amazing. I see them on the road. They’re always driving safely,” Kelly said.
