A Clearing man was charged March 26 with fatally attacking a woman and his brother in their Gage Park apartment March 23 and then stabbing a woman at a neighboring tavern, police said.
Robert Romo, 57, of the 6400 block of South Austin Avenue, was charged with two felony counts of first-degree murder, one felony count of attempted first-degree murder, and one felony count of aggravated battery and use of a deadly weapon, police said.
Police said Romo fatally shot his brother, Richard M. Romo, 63, and stabbed his partner, Rita Chavez, 64, about 10 p.m. March 23 in the 5300 block of South Kedzie Avenue. He then went to the tavern a few minutes later and stabbed a 44-year-old woman.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the deaths homicides, caused by multiple gunshot wounds and sharp force injuries.
Police said officers responded to a person shot call at the apartment building, where they found an open door. In the apartment, police found a man with a gunshot wound to the head and a woman with multiple stab wounds to the body. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Romo then went to the Just One More Sports Bar, 5332 S. Kedzie, and attacked the 44-year-old woman, who suffered multiple lacerations to her body. When officers entered the bar, they found Romo holding a knife in his right hand and a handgun in his left hand, an arrest report stated. Officers tased Romo after giving “multiple orders to drop the weapons,” which he didn’t listen to, the report said. Officers were then able to disarm Romo and handcuff him.
The woman was taken to Mount Sinai hospital, where she was listed in good condition, according to police.
Romo was also taken to the hospital for a possible stroke, records stated.
He was not at Wednesday’s detention hearing at 2600 S. California, but Cook County Judge Deidre Dyer continued the case until Monday and ordered Romo detained.
