Monee Township voters will be asked on April 1 to decide on a referendum for property tax rebates.

The Monee Township Board voted in December to place the referendum question on the Consolidated Election ballot for township residents.

The question reads: “Shall the State of Illinois, which has the second highest property taxes in the nation, deliver annual property tax rebates to the more than three million residential property taxpayers in Illinois, as provided for in the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund Act of 2019?”

Township Trustee William “Billy” Morgan explained, “As you know, Illinois is supposed to provide a majority of funding for public schools, yet is woefully behind, forcing school districts to heavily utilize the property tax to fund its operations.

“In November, Illinois residents voted to provide property tax relief in a statewide advisory question.

“If the proposal from the November referendum is enacted as proposed, it would be about $500-$1000 per residential property tax payer.”

The referendum is advisory and is only on Monee Township’s ballot at this time, “with hope that legislators and other townships take note,”  Morgan added.

“We can’t forget the voters have spoken loud and clear that they would like for the state to provide relief.

“A mechanism already exists, the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund, to provide direct assistance to property tax payers – yet no money has ever been put in the tax relief fund.

“It’s time we do it and provide relief to the people who are struggling right now.”

Some local villages, including Monee, already offer property tax rebates for residents.

Morgan wrote and proposed another referendum in 2022, asking Monee Township residents if they feel individual voters should have a greater voice in state government. It passed with flying colors in that General Primary Election.

The non-binding question garnered 1,089 votes (78.18 percent) in favor, compared to 304 votes (21.82 percent) opposed.

Because it was non-binding, the referendum was taken as a  recommendation, but included no authority  to enforce it.
