A 23-year-old Chicago man has been charged with attempted murder after a Sheriff’s police investigation found he shot two people last week at a cemetery in Evergreen Park, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Tuesday.

Sheriff’s police responded to a shooting Wednesday, January 29, at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Evergreen Park.

Officers learned that a suspect, later identified as Roger Nava, shot a 25-year-old man and a 24-year-old man following a fight during a burial service at the cemetery.

The victims were taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers also learned Nava allegedly pointed a gun at a third man.

Sheriff’s police officers located Nava, who matched the description of the shooter, near the cemetery and took him into custody. Two loaded firearms were recovered from Nava’s possession.

Further investigation by Sheriff’s police detectives identified Nava, of the 4300 block of South Whipple, as the shooter.

On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved three counts of attempted first-degree murder against Nava.

He was scheduled to appear for his initial hearing Tuesday at the Markham Courthouse.
