A 59-22 home loss to Evergreen Park on Feb. 1 was the fifth straight for Argo girls basketball.
During that stretch, the Argonauts (11-13, 2-8 South Suburban Red) scored more than 30 points just once. In their previous five games they averaged just above 51 points per game.
“We’ve just lost our confidence offensively right now,” coach Dan McCarthy said. “It’s hard to stay in a game when you score 20-something points as a varsity team.”
But even during this rough spell McCarthy has appreciated his players’ effort.
“They are out there trying really hard and they want to be successful,” he said. “We were getting good shots, but (they were) not falling.
“It would be great if we can get someone to step up and get hot from the field.”
Junior guard Aliyah Cummings did what she could, leading the way with 14 points and three rebounds.
“This is one of her better games,” McCarthy said. “She’s gaining a lot of confidence at the tail end of her junior year and we need her to keep shooting like that.”
McCarthy said Cummings averages just under 10 points per game for the season.
Argo has nearly tripled its win total from last season. But McCarthy wants to end the season on a high note especially after this losing stretch.
“We’d like to finish over .500,” he said.
