Palos Park police arrested a man Thursday night after he allegedly stole a Jewel-Osco employee’s backpack and attacked him in the store parking lot.

Officers responded shortly after 10 p.m. to reports of a fight outside the Jewel-Osco at 9652 W. 131st Street. They arrived to find a 61-year-old employee bleeding from the face. Paramedics were called to treat his injuries, which included cuts and bruises.

The victim told police he had just finished his shift and set his backpack down on a bench inside the store while clocking out. A co-worker then told him a man—who had previously been asked to leave the store—grabbed the backpack and walked out.

The employee spotted the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Jason L. Garza of Alsip, walking away with the stolen bag. When he confronted Garza, the suspect allegedly threw the backpack to the ground and then started punching him in the face.

Officers found Garza at the east end of the parking lot. According to police, he resisted when they tried to take him into custody, leading officers to use force to restrain him. He was later taken to Palos Northwestern Hospital after making comments to paramedics.

Garza was charged with theft, battery, and resisting arrest. Police said he has a lengthy criminal record and that additional charges may be filed.

Following the incident, Palos Park Police Chief Joe Miller reminded shoppers to stay alert and secure their belongings, emphasizing that thieves often target unattended bags. The department also encouraged people to avoid carrying unnecessary valuables and to remain aware of their surroundings.
