Indulge yourself with a cup on National Hot Chocolate Day

January 31 is finally here and it’s National Hot Chocolate Day. I have been enjoying hot chocolate from my Keurig and I top it off with jet-puffed marshmallow fluff. That gives me a great sugar start to the mornings.

Last week, while at the grocery store, I had the pleasure of running into the former Gage Park correspondent, Karen Sala. We had a nice visit. And then while walking out I ran into Elsa’s (the St. Turibius convent dog) agility trainer Audrey. Again, we had a nice visit. What shocks me is that Elsa is now going on 8 years old (if I got that right). And she does an amazing job of jumping through hoops. Where does time go?

Reading the Curie High School Facebook page, I must say congratulations to the girls’ bowling team. The young ladies won their series against Hancock. Go Curie Condors! And after reading the post, I had memories of myself bowling for Lourdes High School back in the ‘70s. And where else at – good old Miami Bowl. Our team was called the Gutter Cats. But lately I have been visiting Lawn Lanes on Pulaski. My friend Mike bowls there on Wednesdays and I sometimes join him for a cold one after bowling. They have a cute little bar where we play Jeopardy.

The second graders at Sts. Bruno & Richard School received a lesson in government workings. Alderwoman Gutierrez visited the class to share her experiences in local government. The second-graders showed excitement and had thoughtful questions. Thank you, Alderwoman.

As a reminder, on Sunday, Feb. 9, visit the West Lawn Branch of the Chicago Public Library for the Avanti Guitar Trio concert. This event starts at 3 p.m.

Just when you think you have laid off the bad stuff – it comes around again to tease you. Yes, I am talking about Girl Scout cookie time. I was already hit up at my neighborhood hangout to buy some boxes. But who does not love the cookies. St. Daniel the Prophet’s troop will be selling on Feb.16 and 23. They are delicious and it is truly a great cause. I loved the Girl Scouts while at St. Turibius, Mrs. M. and Troop 1705. The camping trips will always be a fond memory for me. So, let’s open the pocket books and put on the calories.
