At 5:17 a.m., on January 23, Manhattan Police Officers discovered a broken glass entry door at Southside Tobacco and Vape, 24520 S. Rt. 52. Officers cleared the building for any suspects and made notification to the business owner. Early investigative findings show the offenders arrived in a dark colored SUV and used an unknown item to break the glass door to gain entry and take items, such as cartons of cigarettes. Detectives are reviewing video surveillance and following other leads. At the time of this incident, records indicated Manhattan Police Officers were in an adjacent subdivision conducting extra patrol and glass/business checks at another tobacco store (due to the recent rise in burglaries of businesses like this one in nearby jurisdictions). If anyone has additional information or surveillance video, please contact Manhattan Police Department at 815-478-4408.

On January 19, officers stopped Brandy N. Sims, 33, of Joliet, in the area of Rt. 52 and Hoff for tinted windows. Prior to the traffic stop, officers learned the owner of the vehicle, Sims, had a revoked driver’s license. Sims was placed into custody and issued citations for driving while license revoked and tinted front/side windows.
