Nicholas Mioni has always been an athlete, striving to improve his skills at every opportunity. Whether it was neighborhood baseball games or collegiate volleyball matches, Mioni’s determination to excel never wavered.
A graduate of Trinity Christian College with a bachelor’s degree in sports and recreation management, Mioni achieved his dream when he became the athletic coordinator for the Worth Park District, located at 11500 S. Beloit Ave.
“I feel it is very important for kids to get into sports due to the lessons they learn throughout their athletic careers,” said Mioni, of Chicago Ridge. “Not only are sports a fantastic way to get out of the house and keep yourself in shape, but you also have the opportunity to create lifelong friendships and learn many different things about yourself through sports.”
Though this is Mioni’s first role within a park district, he is eager to apply his background to the position.
“I was able to introduce a winter bean bag league with the neighboring golf course, Water’s Edge, which wasn’t happening before,” he said.
Mioni has also revitalized the Worth Comets Basketball Club, a program with a storied history. It’s now run by a former player aiming to restore its competitive legacy.
This spring, he plans to implement a 16-inch softball league, a project close to his heart.
“I come from a big softball family, in fact, both of my parents are hall of famers,” Mioni said. “The game is a part of who I am, and I’d love to implement a league that can grow to become one of the more competitive leagues in the area.”
Growing up in the Village of Worth with seven siblings, Mioni’s upbringing shaped his passion for fostering community engagement.
“One of the main reasons I advocate for children to get more involved in sports is you learn how to work together with a team of other players,” he said. “You learn what it’s like to trust someone else to do their job and to be depended on to complete your end of the job. This is a critical skill in the workplace.”
For Mioni, working with children and introducing them to sports is a dream come true, especially in his hometown.
“What I like most about working here is how tight knit everyone is,” he said. “You can tell the staff enjoys working together and is always willing to help. It made me feel very welcome and comfortable as I found my place here in the park district.”
Staff are happy to have him, as well.
“Nick has been a wonderful addition to the Rec team here at the Worth Park District. Martha Zubaty, Recreation Program Manager at the Worth Park District, said. “Nick brings a youthful and inspired perspective to the team. He is a great athlete himself and is passionate about facilitating others who seek comradery, growth, and fun. He brings talent and knowledge to the Rec team which will help us bolster and develop the athletic programs we can offer.”
Mioni’s passion for sports and community shines through in every initiative, reflecting his dedication to fostering not just athleticism but a sense of belonging and teamwork for future generations.
