A date went horribly wrong when a woman used a man’s phone to withdraw $300 through a mobile payment service before disappearing with his wallet, keys, and even his phone, Palos Hills police said.
The man told police he met the woman online and picked her up on Sunday, Jan. 14, in the 7200 block of Southwest Highway. After spending the evening together, they stopped at a gas station in the 7700 block of Southwest Highway. He fell asleep in his car, and when he woke up, the woman was gone — along with his wallet, cash, Link card, bank card, keys, and cell phone.
During the investigation, police said they discovered the woman used the man’s phone to request his password, which he provided. She then accessed his account and withdrew about $300 before taking off.
Palos Hills Police Deputy Chief Anthony Carroccio said incidents like this aren’t uncommon when it comes to online dating. He urged people to be cautious when meeting someone online and avoid sharing sensitive information with someone they don’t know well.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to identify the suspect. Police are reminding people to use caution during online interactions and to report anything that doesn’t feel right.
