The Oak Lawn police force has added a sergeant to the ranks to begin the new year.
Joseph Lutzke was officially promoted to sergeant during the Oak Lawn Village Board meeting Tuesday night. Lutzke took the oath from Village Clerk Claire Henning.
Police Chief Daniel Vittorio said that Lutzke has been a positive addition to the force. Lutzke has been an Oak Lawn police officer for 17 years and had been promoted to detective and worked in the tactical unit.
“If I needed something done, I could always count on him to do it,” Vittorio said.
Lutzke received his pin from his wife, Stephanie. Also on hand to view the event were his two children and parents.
The Oak Lawn Police Club also presented the Project Fire Buddies organization with a $200 check for their efforts in providing care for children battling critical illnesses. Vittorio made the presentation during the meeting to Nick Engel, who serves as president of the Oak Lawn Fire Department Project Fire Buddies chapter. Lutzke was on hand for the presentation.

The Fire Buddies has a network of 108 chapters across 10 states. Members of Fire Buddies visit homes, often arriving in fire vehicles with lights blazing and sirens blaring. They also bring gifts for birthdays and holidays and often visit fire houses.
In a related matter, the board also approved the request by the Fire and Police Commission to promote one fire engineer from the respective eligibility list to fill a vacancy due to a recently announced retirement.
The board also approved a Fire and Police Commission request to hire a firefighter/paramedic from the new eligibility list to fill a vacancy created by a promotion.
Trustee William “Bud” Stalker (5th) is pleased with the efforts of the public works department for keeping the streets plowed after recent snowfalls this past week.
“I just want to thank them for getting out the snowplows and doing a great job,” Stalker said.
Trustee Ralph Soch (6th) agreed with Stalker regarding the snowplows and the other duties of the public works department.
“I just want to thank public works, these guys are on top of it,” Soch said. “They have had to deal with water main breaks and get to it right away. My kudos go out to public works.”
A resolution approving a proposal from Strand Associates Inc., for engineering services for the 95th Street and Cicero Avenue street lighting upgrades project for an amount not to exceed $132,900 was voted in by the board.
The board also approved a proposal by Strand Associates Inc., for engineering, construction, bidding, and design services for the 2024-25 sanitary rehabilitation program for an amount not to exceed $110,800.
Mayor Terry Vorderer also applauded all the departments and is looking forward to a productive 2025.
“I’m wishing all my constituents a Happy New Year,” Vorderer said.
