Palos Park Police Officer Bob Kotsianis was cited for calling for firefighters after he spotted smoke coming from a home Monday afternoon.
Palos Park Mayor Nicole Milovich Walters on Tuesday praised Kotsianis for his actions Monday.
“Monday afternoon, while on patrol, driving down 81st Avenue, Officer Bob Kotsianis was performing the critical function of patrolling his beat. It was then that he noticed smoke coming from the second floor of a home as he drove down the street.
“Officer Kotsianis radioed for fire assistance and then checked the home for occupants, as he directed assisting responding police units to do the same and check with neighbors.
“We realize patrol officers are the most indispensable tool in the law enforcement toolbox, they are a presence on patrol, for everyone’s sake. Thank you for your dedication to duty, Palos Park Police Officer Bob Kotsianis.”
The fire broke out at around 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of 81st Avenue and 125th Street. Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the roof of the home.
Firefighters from 10 different agencies responded to the scene. Crews said it took firefighters about two hours to get the fire under control.
Neighbor Carolyn Mitchell lives across the street and was dog sitting when she noticed smoke coming from the home.
“We were shocked, absolutely shocked. I’m glad no one was hurt,” Mitchell told WGN-TV. “I feel terrible. My heart goes out to all of them. No one wants to lose their home, especially when it’s wintertime, too. You have to find shelter. Hopefully they have family who can help them.”
Officials said the fire appears to have started in the basement and traveled to the attic. No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Police Chief Joe Miller said patrol officers like Kotsianis play a key role in protecting the community.
“Patrolling is considered the backbone of what we do,” Miller said. “Patrol is a key foundation in ensuring crime prevention and deterring unlawful activity by establishing an active police presence in a community. We are extremely proud of our PPPD team. These men and women give their very best to protect our community, prevent crime, engage with the community, and make living here enjoyable and safe.”
