Crete-Monee Middle School’s eighth grade girls basketball team made history by bringing home an Illinois Elementary School Association’s Class 4A trophy on Dec. 19.
The Warriors wrapped up the season with a 20-7 season and finishing in third place as coach Harold Triche’s team had a strong run against a challenging schedule before qualifying for the state quarterfinals, which took place at Parkside Junior High School in Normal.
The Warriors opened the tournament on a big note with a 35-28 win over Bolingbrook’s Jane Adams as Jasmine Franklin led the team with 12 points while Ka’Miyah Reed added nine. Jane Adams brought in a 21-0 record into the contest.
Crete was beaten in the semifinals, 34-14 by Edwardsville. Reed led the Warriors with six points.
But in the third-place game, the team regrouped and beat Homewood Hart 26-17. Franklin had nine points while Reed and N’Dia Oliver each had six and Jada Franklin five.
Other players on the playoff rosters were Makynzie Walker, Kayleana Lewis, Harper Lear, Nyah Sykes, Jozarra Lewis, Madison Myers, Cashnay Davis-Brown, Scarlett Terrazas, A’Merica Cole and Alea Thorne.
As seventh graders, the Warriors went to state in Class 4A and lost in the quarterfinals.
This was the best finish by a girls basketball team in the history of the school.
Overall, it’s the fourth time a Warriors team brought home a trophy. The boys eighth-grade track and field team won the Class AA state title in 2019 and the seventh grade boys took third in the state in Class AA in 2015. The seventh-grade girls track team also placed third in the state in 2015.
