The Township of Lyons will host its final repair café of the year from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at the township hall, 6404 Joliet Road.
You can bring a wide range of household items in for repairs free of charge, Township Clerk Elyse Hoffenberg said during the township board meeting Oct. 8.
Broken lamps, broken power tools and even pants with ripped seams can be repaired.
Hoffenberg said a knife sharpener usually there is not able to attend the Oct. 19 event.
“However, we will have a composting specialist to assist people in learning more about composting,” she said.
Hoffenberg said the previous repair café held on Sept. 21 “was very well-attended.”
A records disposal and community shred day at the township hall on Oct. 5 wound up collecting 4,120 pounds of paper for recycling, she said.
The township will host an AARP Safe Driver course for those age 50 and older from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 29 and 30.
Class size is limited to 25. The fee is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members. Call 708-482-8300, option 4, for more information.
Participants must attend both days to receive car insurance credit.
In other business, the board unanimously approved
- A $500 donation to the Willow Springs Lions Club for its annual Lions Candy Day on Oct. 12.
- A $1,000 donation to the village of McCook for its annual Brew Moon Festival at the MAX, 4750 Vernon Ave., from 6 to 11 p.m. Oct. 19.
- A $500 sponsorship to the Justice Park District for its Winter Wonderland on Dec. 7.
The board approved a $5 per increase in the hourly rate paid Cook County Sheriff’s Police who patrol unincorporated areas.
The hourly rate will increase from $35 to $40, Township Supervisor Christopher Getty said.
There have been no complaints heard from residents about the program, Getty said. The past two months, the township spent $12,600 to pay sheriff’s police, he said.
