It’s going to be a while longer before the Chicago Red Stars are back in town.
Thanks to the international break caused by the Olympics, the NWSL resumes play in late August. The Red Stars have two games on the road (Aug. 24 at Louisville and Sept. 1 at Angel City) before finally coming home to SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview on Sept. 8 for a battle with the Orlando Pride at 5 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8.
It will be the first chance for the home fans to welcome back Olympic gold medalists Mallory Swanson and Alyssa Naher.
It will also be a chance to pay homage to an area teacher who is also doing some amazing things on an international level.
Richards teacher Christina Kreil is a nominee for the She Inspires Me Award and will get recognized by the Stars before the game. Kreil, who had a leg amputated last year because of a rare bone disease, is going to represent the United States Amputee soccer team in the inaugural Women’s World Cup in November in Colombia.
She has travelled around the country seeking specialists for her illness because medical experts are unsure how to effectively treat it.
“I’m going to keep fighting teaching and playing soccer,” Krell told Southwest Regional Publishing reporter Kelly White. “My disease and by [U.S. Amputee soccer] team – nobody knows about. And, I would like to get the word out about both.”
