Two area colleges are welcoming new women’s basketball coaches for the 2024-25 season.

Alyssa Moore was named coach at Trinity Christian College and John Bongiorno is taking over over at Morton College.

Moore fills the vacancy that has been held by interim coach Dominique Nelson, whose team finished 4-22 last season. Moore comes from Bluefield State in West Virginia, where she was an assistant coach and was responsible for player recruiting and development. Prior to that, she was a graduate assistant at South Carolina, which enjoyed an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2022-23, losing to Iowa and Caitlin Cark in the national semifinals.

Moore played high school hoops at Kenwood and in college at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and is looking forward to returning to the Midwest for her first head coaching job.

“As I embark upon this journey, I’m elated to build upon the foundation as a Troll leading a group of tremendous student-athletes with Christian values and beliefs,” Moore stated in a press release. “It brings me great joy to return to the Chicago area to recruit Midwestern talent who will contribute by putting in work academically and athletically.”

The Trolls kick off the season Oct. 31 when they host Campbellsville-Harrodsburg (Kentucky) at DeVos Gymnasium. Trinity plays at Division I Valparaiso on Nov. 12.

At Morton, Bongiorno replaces interim coach Jeff Bambule, who filled the void left by Jason Nichols’ departure during a season in which the Panthers finished fifth in the nation in National Junior College Athletic Association Division II.

Bongiorno has coached at various levels since the 1990s.

“I’m the kind of coach who liked to build relationships with players,” he stated in a press release. “If a player sees they care about you, they’ll respect you. I enjoy coaching and the day-to-day interactions with the game of basketball.”

He says he coaches an up-tempo offense, which fits as the Panthers were one of the top-scoring squads in the nation last season.
