Two doubles teams from Lyons made deep runs at the IHSA Class 2A boys tennis state finals, with one of them bringing home some hardware.

The boys state tennis finals were held at various sites in the north and northwest suburbs May 23-25.

The Lions’ Jack McLane and Mason Mazzone won their first five matches in straight sets and was one set win away from a state championship after topping New Trier’s Chris Ackerman and Jovan Morales, 6-4, in the first set of the title match. But the Trevians fought back, winning the next two sets, 6-1, 6-2, to secure the championship.

The Lions’ second doubles team of Luke Howell and Shay Sweigard won three straight matches before falling in two sets, 6-0, 6-2, to Ackerman and Morales in the quarterfinals. Howell and Sweigard won a match in the three sets in the consolation bracket before bowing out in the consolation semifinals.

The Lions finished fifth in the Class 2A team standings.

Nazareth’s Ryan Nelson came out red hot with three wins to reach the singles quarterfinals in Class 1A, but dropped his next two matches.
