Bridgeview police have charged a man accused of crashing a stolen postal van into a vehicle injuring a mother and two young children on Wednesday.
Miguel Alvarado, 36, was charged late Thursday with aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle and two counts of aggravated reckless driving.
Additional charges are expected to be filed once Bedford Park police and Oak Lawn police finish their own investigations, Bridgeview police spokesman Ray Hanania said.
Alvarado’s last known addresses were Ozone Park, New York, and Beaumont, Texas.
The incident began Wednesday afternoon when Bedford Park police arrested Alvarado for disorderly conduct around 2:45 p.m. in the 6800 block of South Archer Road. He somehow stole the Bedford Park police squad and drove it to 97th and Avon in Chicago Ridge.
He abandoned the squad, though the reason remains unclear, and then commandeered a U.S. Postal service truck from its female driver and headed northbound on Roberts Road.
While traveling north on Roberts Road he was involved in a four-vehicle accident near 81st and Roberts.
Bridgeview Police Chief Ricardo Mancha said two vehicles suffered minor damage while the postal van and the car carrying the family were heavily damaged.
Alvarado, the mom and one of the children were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. A second child was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. The children were aged 4 and 7. Both remained hospitalized as of Friday.
Mancha said the FBI would probably get involved at some point because of the hijacking of the postal vehicle.
The accident forced Bridgeview police to close a mile-long stretch of Roberts Road in both directions from 79th to 87th streets Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the accident happened about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
