The new Beecher police station could be completed in April.
Mayor Marcy Meyer told the village board at the March 10 meeting the $4.5 million building, at 250 W. Church Road, is coming along nicely.
“They were talking about completing it in May, but it could be done before May,” she said.
Meyer took a recent trip to the site and came away impressed.
“It’s pretty cool now that the walls are up,” she said. “Most of the ceilings are in, and they are working on the flooring.
“It’s a huge difference with the walls. Without the walls, it seemed tiny. But now you could get lost going through the halls, so it’s pretty cool.”
Lions Club event discussed
Beecher’s Lions Club is proposing August 23 for its All-American Days/Military Tribute/Car Show and Burnout Event, plus a farmer’s market on Gould Street.
For the most part, board members approved of the way things were handled last year, with the exception of some street damage suffered from motorcycles. The damage has still not been fixed, but Lions Club President Joe Burgess said it should be fixed shortly.
The board told him if there is damage this year, they want the repairs to be done in a timely manner.
Helping Grant Park
The village has an Emergency Management Mutual Aid contract with Will County, but the board is considering assisting neighboring Grant Park even though that community is in Kankakee County.
Grant Park has sent personnel to assist Beecher for events such as the Fourth of July, and board members say they want to extend the courtesy back to Grant Park. The board would have to draw up an intergovernmental agreement at a future meeting to make it official.
Tasers purchased
The board agreed to purchase 10 Axon Taser 10 guns from Axon Enterprise for $49,398 over five years, beginning in May.
At a prior board meeting, Police Chief Terrence Lemming said the current tasers are in working order, but are obsolete and cannot be fixed if anything goes wrong with them.
