Hytham Elyyan, a lifelong Palos Hills resident, is challenging incumbent 1st Ward Ald. Michael Price, bringing more than a decade of experience in local government and a deep commitment to the community to the race.

Born and raised in Palos Hills, Elyyan went to Stagg High School before earning an associate degree from Moraine Valley Community College and a bachelor’s in criminal justice from Governors State University. His passion for public service started early—at 16, he joined the Oak Lawn Police Department’s cadet program, getting hands-on experience in law enforcement. By 18, he was working as a community service officer, and at 21, he landed his first full-time job with the Park Forest Police Department.

“I have over 10 years of experience working in local municipal governments, so I have a good idea of what goes on behind the scenes and how things get done,” Elyyan said.

Now raising a family in Palos Hills, he hopes his kids will one day attend the same schools he did. “I’m raising my kids here, and I want to see our community continue to grow and thrive,” he said.

Elyyan’s campaign is built around key priorities like economic development, government transparency, and public safety. He wants to attract new businesses while helping existing ones succeed. “We’ve seen great improvements along Harlem Avenue, and I think it’s essential we continue to grow a strong local economy, providing good jobs and enhancing our community,” he said.

Transparency and communication with residents are also big focuses. “Transparency is very important. We’re elected by the residents, and ultimately, we are sworn to serve them. Communication can come in a variety of ways—Facebook posts, updates on the city’s website, town hall meetings—and I think we could improve in that area,” he said.

As a sergeant with a local police department, Elyyan understands the challenges facing law enforcement, particularly when it comes to hiring and keeping officers long-term. “There’s an issue right now with recruitment and retention across the region. We want officers to come here, make this their home, and spend their entire careers here. It gives them a sense of belonging and strengthens their connection to the community,” he explained, adding that a positive and respectful work culture is key to keeping good officers.

Elyyan believes his professional background and personal experience give him the tools to serve Ward 1 effectively. “I want to help reduce unnecessary spending without compromising the quality of social services our community depends on,” he said, noting that creative solutions and grant funding could help stretch the city’s budget.

Beyond the issues, Elyyan has a strong connection to the community and its local businesses. His family often visits Durbins Pizza, one of their favorite spots. “I’m even using a local business to create my political signs,” he added, showing his support for Palos Hills’ economy.

For residents who want to learn more about his campaign or upcoming events, Elyyan encourages them to visit his Facebook page, Haytham Elyyan for Palos Hills 1st Ward Alderman,” or email him at elyyanforalderman@gmail.com.

“I want people to know that I care deeply about this community. I’m committed to listening, learning, and working hard to make Palos Hills an even better place to live, work, and raise a family,” he said.

The election is April 1. Early voting begins Monday, March 17.
