The village of Justice has a new police officer, but he is not new to law enforcement.

The village board at its Feb. 24 meeting unanimously approved the  hiring of police officer Ahmad Boyd.

Boyd’s first day on duty was March 6.

After the board meeting, Deputy Police Chief Fred Schuerg said Boyd brings plenty of experience to the Justice Police Department.

“He’s an experienced officer coming from Robbins. He has at least five years (of experience),” Schuerg said.

Despite the hiring, the department is not fully staffed due to some retirements.

In other business, the board unanimously approved making a $100 donation to the Special Olympics Illinois.

The board also heard from Rachel Niesen of the Cook County Sheriff Department’s Community Engagement Unit.

“We are going out to different municipalities and townships throughout the county to find out what resources they need and what programs they’d like to see more of,” Niesen told the board during the public comments portion of the meeting.

Senior programs offered dealing with scams, financial security and self defense, she said. Most of the programs are about public safety and crime prevention, she said..

Mayor Kris Wasowicz said he likes the idea of a sheriff’s department representative meeting with seniors to share with them what is available.

“Thank you very much. I appreciate it,” he told Niesen.

The village board’s next meeting was scheduled for 7 p.m. March 10.
