Gerald Honda in Countryside will have a new sign after winning approval from the city council.
Aldermen voted 6-0 to approve construction of a monument sign at the auto dealership, 5901 S. La Grange Road, during the meeting of Feb. 26.
The plan commission and zoning board earlier last month approved the sign that has two variances for height and square footage.
The sign will be 19 feet and 10 inches tall. That’s taller than usual, but is smaller than the current sign that is 20 feet and six inches tall. A variance was required.
The sign will have a square footage of just under 100 square feet per side, which is larger than the permitted 65 square feet.
The zoning board recommended also approving that variance.
No objections were heard to the two variances at the zoning meeting. And the city council unanimously gave its approval.
Mayor Sean McDermott thanked the Honda dealership “for being such a great neighbor and part of the city of Countryside.”
Extensive renovations to the dealership’s building have been going on for several months.
“They‘ve been great to work with,” the mayor added.
The council also approved the hiring of two maintenance workers for the Department of Public Works.
Also, Police Chief Paul Klimek requested the city approve giving a vehicle left, which is considered surplus property, to the village of McCook free of charge.
“It hasn’t been used (by the police department),” Klimek said. “McCook was the only agency that said they’d be interested.”
The council approved his proposal by a 6-0 vote.
In other business, the council approved paying Novotny Engineering $72,500 for design of the 2024 street rehabilitation project and $76,951 to Unique Plumbing Co., based in Brookfield, for the 2024 water main replacement project.
The council approved paying $99,998 for a new dump truck/snow plow.
“We approved one earlier at a higher price because International didn’t have one available. Now they do at a lower price,” Ald. Mark Benson (3rd) said.
The city council’s next meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. March 12.
