For the second straight year, ads touting the city of Countryside will be heard during radio broadcasts of White Sox and Bears games.
The city council at its Feb. 12 meeting unanimously approved paying $130,000 to Good Karma Brands — doing business as ESPN Chicago (AM 1000) — to have the aids played on that radio station.
City Administrator Gail Paul told the council that the amount was reduced by $10,000 from last year for the same deal.
“The past several years we had advertised on White Sox radio. Last year, for the first time, on Bears radio,” she said.
“The White Sox are turning 125 (years old) this year, so they have special events going on. And, there’s a lot of buzz about the Bears,” Paul said.
There was no debate among the aldermen.
After the meeting, Paul said she’s encouraged with the play of quarterback Caleb Williams in the 2024 season, along with the Bears hiring Ben Johnson as their new head coach.
A Bears fan, she likes the way the team is trending: “I sure do, and I’m hoping I can go to a game next year.”
Then there’s the White Sox who are coming off a 41-121, the worst record ever by a major league baseball team.
“They upped the number of tickets they’re giving us, so we signed up again,” Paul said.
Asked if she cheers the Sox or Cubs, she smiled and confided, “Don’t tell the mayor.”
Mayor Sean McDermott, who was not at the meeting, is a devoted fan of the Sox.
“I root for the Sox,” Paul confessed, “unless they are playing the Cubs.”
