Up to 10 inches possible as storm moves into the area, according to the National Weather Service
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued from 9 a.m. Wednesday to 3 a.m. Thursday.
The National Weather Service warns that snow, possibly heavy at times, could bring accumulations between 3 and 6 inches in some areas.
“Travel could be very difficult, including during the Wednesday evening commute,” the advisory states.
A strong winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to Oak Lawn and the southwest suburbs, with accumulations ranging from 5 to 10 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Forecast models predict an expected snowfall of 7 inches across the region, though higher amounts remain possible.
In Oak Lawn, there is a 90% chance of at least 4 inches of snow and a 69% likelihood that totals will reach 6 inches or more. The probability of snowfall exceeding 8 inches is 36%, while the chances of a foot or more remain low at just 2%.
Nearby suburbs, including Orland Park and Lemont, are expected to see between 4 and 9 inches of snow, the weather service said.
With road conditions expected to deteriorate rapidly, officials are urging residents to prepare for hazardous travel. Snowplows will be deployed throughout the storm, but drivers should allow extra time or avoid the roads if possible.
“Don’t crowd the plows while they are working to clear the roads,” Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways maintenance bureau chief Ed Tully said in a statement. “Your best bet is to stay a safe distance behind the plow so you can drive over freshly plowed and salted roadways.”
Residents should also be mindful of local parking restrictions.
For instance, in Orland Park, it is illegal to park a vehicle for more than three minutes while loading or unloading passengers, or for more than 30 minutes while loading or unloading property, on any street once snow begins to fall. The restriction remains in effect for eight hours after snowfall ends if accumulation exceeds two inches. Parking is also prohibited during snow removal operations until they are complete.
Drivers are advised to slow down and use caution while traveling. Latest road conditions for Illinois can be found at www.gettingaroundillinois.com
