The contract for the school resource officer for Beecher School District 200-U will expire at the end of April, and the Beecher Village Board is in the infant stages of a game plan for 2025-2026.

The village is opening the job up for the coming school year, Public Safety Committee Chairman Joe Tieri said at the January 27 village board meeting.

“We met with (the district) and discussed the criteria they would like to see with the SRO,” Tieri said. “Once we get their feedback, we will meet with (Chief Terry Lemming) and send it out to the guys to see who shows interest in it.

“Depending on that, we’ll look at the salaries we are talking about. We will probably have to renegotiate a contract with the school.”

Money will be another wrinkle that needs to be ironed out for the new school year.

During the January 13 village board meeting, it was revealed the district wants to continue with the program but does not want to pay 75 percent of the cost.

The district threw out a 50 percent figure to village officials, while the village suggested a 60/40 percent split.

Lemming had suggested that overtime hours for special events would be paid by the school.

Water main breaks

Freezing weather caused a series of recent water main breaks in the village.

While it is concerning, Public Works Director Matthew Connor said it is not surprising, given some of the cold temperatures the area has endured in January.

“We had six water main breaks in the past week and a half,” he said. “They mostly were due to the bitter cold.

“When the ground freezes, the pipes shift. It’s called pipe deflection. It’s not uncommon to get water main breaks in a short amount of time.”

He said that breaks in the Orchard Lane, Willow Lane, and Meadow Lane areas are common during cold snaps
