On Monday, January 27, detectives from the Peotone and New Lenox Police Departments apprehended Leonard R. Hunter, 27, of the 18200 block of Ravisle Terrace, Country Club Hills, in connection with a series of robberies and burglaries, though charges stem from incidents that occurred on January 4 and January 10.
On January 4, the Peotone Police Department responded to a theft at the Peotone Travel Center, 601 S. 88th Avenue. According to the clerk, a male suspect wearing a mask entered the store, grabbed the lottery ticket display from the counter, and exited toward three accomplices holding the door ajar. The four individuals fled the scene in a Lincoln SUV.
Peotone detectives discovered the same group was involved in similar thefts in New Lenox, Chicago, and Matteson, using a red pickup truck and a Lincoln SUV. Investigators determined the vehicles used by the offenders had been rented through an online service. The renter of the vehicles subsequently was identified.
Security video from the vehicle pick-up location revealed an individual matching the description of Hunter, wearing similar clothing to a suspect seen on surveillance footage during the theft at Food N’ Fuel. Additional security footage from multiple locations showed the same suspect cashing in stolen lottery tickets.
On January 27, detectives from Peotone and New Lenox, located and arrested Hunter in Country Club Hills. He has been charged with robbery and burglary in the New Lenox incident, as well as burglary for the Peotone incident. This investigation remains ongoing, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
