Pass Health Foods has been there for 30 years keeping its customers healthy with a store stocked with shelves of carefully curated health foods, specialty teas, and top-notch supplements.

For three decades, this beloved shop has been a go-to destination for health-conscious residents in Palos Heights at 7228 W. College Dr., and co-owner Carolyn Johnson wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We love being in Palos Heights,” Johnson, of Mokena, said with a smile. “This town is filled with so many great small businesses, and the support from the community has been incredible.”

Johnson co-owns the store alongside Liz Ryan, of Morgan Park now.

However, the story of Pass Health Foods began in 1995 when Johnson’s aunts, Joanne and Theresa, found themselves at a career crossroads. Both had been working for the same company when they were unexpectedly downsized. Faced with the challenge of finding new opportunities, they took a leap of faith and decided to purchase the then-small health food store.

“They had always been interested in health and wellness and were regular shoppers at health food stores,” Johnson explained. “When they saw that Pass Health Foods was for sale, they thought it was a great opportunity, not only to go into business together but also to have the flexibility to care for their aging father.”

Over the years, the store has grown both in size and in reputation, offering an extensive selection of products that cater to a diverse range of health needs.

While big-box retailers like Sam’s Club, Target and Walmart dominate the retail landscape, Johnson believes that small businesses like Pass Health Foods offer something unique and essential.

“A small business like ours can stay focused on our mission to actually help people,” she said. “Of course, we’re a business, but our number one goal is to help each person find the products that are right for them and to live a healthier life.”

It’s this personal touch that keeps customers coming back. Whether someone is looking for a specific supplement, advice on wellness, or just a friendly face, the team at Pass Health Foods is there to help.

With shelves loaded with health-boosting goodies, it can be tough to pick just one standout product. Johnson was quick to share that some of their most sought-after items include their impressive selection of teas, healthy snack foods, and high-quality supplements.

“Collagen and curcumin are really popular right now,” she noted. “Curcumin, especially, is great as a natural anti-inflammatory.”

As Pass Health Foods looks toward the future, Johnson is excited to continue serving the Palos Heights community, a community that has helped her to foster connections and promote wellness at the same time.

“I love how the community supports us,” she said. “For example, Mayor Straz judges our Gluten-Free Baking Contest each year, and the other business owners in town are incredibly kind and supportive.”

After 30 years, Pass Health Foods has proven to be more than just a store, it is a cornerstone of the community and a place where health comes first.
