The Archdiocese of Chicago has cleared retired Father William Killeen of allegations of sexual abuse following an investigation.
Father Killeen, who served as an associate pastor at St. Patricia Parish in Hickory Hills from 1982 to 1989, had been accused of abusing a minor over 40 years ago during his time at the parish.
The investigation, conducted in accordance with the Archdiocese’s child protection policies, began when the allegation was first reported to civil authorities. Father Killeen was asked by Cardinal Blase Cupich to step aside from ministry while the claim was thoroughly examined. He complied fully with the directive.
After a review of the case by the Archdiocese’s Independent Review Board, it was determined that there was no reasonable cause to believe that Father Killeen had committed the abuse. Based on the Board’s recommendation, Cardinal Cupich announced that Father Killeen has been reinstated to ministry and that his case file has been closed.
In a letter to the St. Patricia Parish and other communities involved, Cardinal Cupich expressed gratitude for Father Killeen’s years of service, acknowledging the difficult period the priest endured during the investigation. “This period away from ministry has been challenging for him. He deserves our respect and gratitude, and I hope you will join me in thanking him for his long-standing dedication,” Cupich wrote.
Father Killeen, who retired in 2019, occasionally celebrated Mass at various parishes, including St. Francis Xavier and St. Cletus in La Grange, and St. John of the Cross in Western Springs. The original allegation had led to several local parishes being notified as part of the investigation process.
Cardinal Cupich reaffirmed the Archdiocese’s commitment to protecting children and upholding strict procedures for investigating claims of sexual misconduct. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of restoring the reputations of those wrongly accused, like Father Killeen.
“I am committed to restoring the good name of those so accused if the case is unsubstantiated,” Cardinal Cupich stated, adding, “the welfare of the children entrusted to our care is our paramount consideration.”
The Archdiocese continues to encourage anyone who believes they have been abused by clergy or laypersons to come forward and report their experiences, ensuring they are received with respect and compassion. More information can be found on the Archdiocesan website at www.archchicago.org.
