Lyons came into its annual matchup with Glenbard West winless in the conference rivals’ past six meetings.

On a warm fall Saturday afternoon in Western Springs, the Lions ended that streak, employing a stingy defense and an opportunistic offense to beat the Hilltoppers, 24-7, in a West Suburban Silver game on Sept. 21.

Lyons had not beaten Glenbard West since 2016, and coach Jon Beutjer said the victory was especially meaningful for the team’s seniors.

“They put in a lot of time and our kids believed they were going to win,” Beutjer said. “This is really special for our seniors to beat them.

“The kids followed the plan and they were disciplined and composed. I’m really happy for them.”

Lyons improved to 4-0 for the second time in three seasons.

The Lions (4-0, 2-0) began the scoring on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Dominic Pisciotti to Brady Rusk on a fourth-and-goal in which Pisciotti rolled to his left and connected with Rusk, who fought his way into the end zone.

Pisciotti finished 17-of-23 passing for 174 yards. Danny Carroll had a 4-yard rushing touchdown.

Travis Stamm caught nine passes for 99 yards — including a 46-yard reception that set up a  field goal — and scored on a 51-yard interception return. For the versatile Stamm, a four-year starter who plays cornerback and wide receiver, it was his second interception in as many games.

“Travis is such a special athlete,” Beutjer said. He has all of the intangibles and is one of the hardest workers. He’s so focused. He has a great work ethic and knowledge of the game. When he talks, the kids listen.”
