Happy fall, Y’all. The autumnal equinox is upon us on Sept. 22 at 7:43 a.m. (central time). From my understanding of astronomy, the equinox stands for “equal” and at this time of year along with the spring equinox, the northern and southern hemispheres of our earth are tilted at the sun equally. Well anyway, for me it means the start of autumn. Time to get the rakes out.
There will be a “First Responders Mass and Blessing” at St. Richard Church, 5032 S. Kostner. The Mass and blessing will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30. A reception will follow immediately after the Mass.
The next scheduled Beat 822 CAPS meeting will be held on Oct. 1. The meeting will be held at Peck Elementary School starting at 7 p.m.
St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of the environment, animals, and birds. His feast day is Oct. 4. Hence this time of year many churches honor him by blessing the animals of the community. St. Daniel the Prophet will hold a pet blessing on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. in front of the church. All house pets are invited to join in this blessing. Some churches closer to the West Elsdon/Archer Heights community have held pet blessings. If I hear of any one closer, I will follow up with the date, time, and location. But St. Dan’s is just down Archer at 5337 S. Natoma.
Bingo will be played this Saturday, Sept. 21, at St. Richard Church Hall, 50th and Kenneth. St. Richard hosts bingo once a month. The doors open at 4:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 6 p.m. Don’t forget there is always bingo on Friday evenings at St. Bruno Hall. In fact, both bingo sites are looking for some fun-loving reliable volunteers. No experience is necessary and you will be trained at the simple tasks involved. The evening is usually 4 to 5 hours, which fly by. Please call 773 585-1221 if interested and leave a message.
Back in the late ‘70s, I spent many an evening at St. Bruno bingo selling coffee. There just happened to be the “cutest boy” calling the bingo numbers. And on that note, I would like to wish that “cutest boy” – my husband – a Happy 44th Wedding Anniversary. And it all started at St. Bruno bingo.
