
There’s a bite in the air and Halloween decorations are on sale everywhere! Time for football and bonfires and curling up with a good book. The days may be getting shorter but there’s still plenty to do. It’s going to be a busy month around the neighborhood this fall so keep a look out for these events popping up all month in our neck of the woods!

Time for Tots Story Time and Craft Mondays at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 15 months to 4 years. Stories, songs, play and a craft. No class October 14. Come in Halloween costume on October 28.
Senior Fall Prevention Seminar Saturday, September 28 at 2 p.m. Tips for preventing falls as we enter our golden years. Sponsored by Fyzical Therapy on Archer Avenue, you will earn ways to identify compromises in balance, stability, and strength that could make you susceptible to a fall. Senior Coffee Hour will meet on Thursday, October 10 at 1 p.m. This is a great way to meet new people and learn about what’s going on in the neighborhood and what the library has to offer seniors. Special breakfast gift certificate raffle. Stay for Game Day at 2 p.m.
Senior Spooky Bingo! Thursday, October 17 at 2 p.m. for seniors 55 and up. Sponsored by Oak Street Health on Archer Avenue, join us for a ghoulish good time!
Second annual Oferenda Display “Day of the Dead” is on November 1 and 2. Join us as we create an altar to remember our loved ones who have passed away. Bring in a photo of a family member, friend or pet to the Garfield Ridge Library or email your picture to: gherrera@chipublib.org. The altar will be on display starting in October. We will accept pictures through Monday, October 21.
Clearing Public Library Programs
Thank you to the families and especially the children of Clearing for another successful Summer at CPL! We are proud of all the participants who participated in Find Your Rhythm through reading, discovering and doing!
A special thanks to our wonderful performers and presenters who helped make our summer even more special including Boitsov Classical Ballet School, Brain to Belly Yoga, Bray Ballet, Chicago Highlanders Pipes and Drums, Chicago Mini Musicians, Journey and Thingz, Marc Dunworth Foundation and the Old Town School of Folk Music. As always, we thank the Chicago Public Library Foundation for their support funding our summer at the library. Also, thank you to the McDonald’s Corporation and Lou Malnati’s Chicago Midway for their generous donations. He would never thank himself so a big thanks to Branch Manager Rob Bitunjac for bringing his retro video games to the library for a weekend for all to enjoy! Thank you all for your support!
Story Time with Ms. Kim meets on Thursdays at 11 a.m. from September 26 – October 17. Join us for story time especially for our littlest patrons! We share songs, rhymes and books, plus suggestions for at-home activities. For kids 0 to 5 and their caregivers.
Halloween Rock Painting Join in the neighborhood craze of rock painting! Paint a ghostly, ghastly or ghoulish rock for yourself or leave it somewhere for someone else to find as a Halloween treat. All materials are provided. For kids 3 and older accompanied by an adult. Tuesday, October 15, at 4 p.m.

The Garfield Ridge Senior Center, located at Archer and Laramie, (5674-B S. Archer Ave.) hosts Brain Aerobics on Wednesdays, September 25-October 23 from 10-11:30 a.m. Join in for this interactive, informative and educational program and learn how to exercise your brain and keep cognitive function going strong. A Bingo Party will take place on Friday, September 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s $15 a person and includes catering from Jewel. Purchase ticket by September 20 to attend. Game 10 winner receives a $20 gift card!
The Midway Garden Society meets on the last Wednesday of the month at the Clearing Library, located 6423 W. 63rd Place, from 6-8 p.m. The Midway Garden Society’s next meeting will be on Wednesday, September 25, at 6 p.m. There will be a guest speaker from Anything Orchids and who will speak about the care and maintenance of orchids and following presentation, there will be a Q & A. (There will also be orchids for sale).
Yo Soy Vella Candles is a one-of-a-kind new business located at 6623 W. Archer Ave. Are you looking to support a new local business? Are you interested in attending one of their candle-making workshops? Paint a wineglass or grab a Make and Take Craft for home? Stop by for a monthly calendar of events and meet the owner, Mildred.
