Last season, Argo made the state playoffs in consecutive campaigns for the first time in program history

On opening night in Chicago’s Bronzeville community, they Argonauts took their first step toward securing a third straight postseason berth, defeating De La Salle 45-0 in a non-conference matchup at Parente Field.

Argo senior running back Steven Holmes carried 17 times for 136 yards and scored four touchdowns, all before halftime, as the guests surged ahead to a 31-0 advantage.

“This felt good,” Holmes said. “There were a little nerves, but we did what we were supposed to do. We executed, stayed clean and came home with the ‘W.’

Argonauts coach Phillips Rossberg pointed to his team’s chemistry

“This is a senior-heavy class and they’ve been together for the last three years,” Argonauts head coach Phillip Rossberg said. “They work well together. There’s leadership and they’re starting to jell.

“We’re starting strong and we’ll continue to build and keep going from here. Our kids are happy but not satisfied.”

Holmes said the team’s goas include hosting an IHSA first-round playoff game, hosting a state semifinals and winning a state championship.

“We’re all on the same page and Coach (Rossberg) is very passionate about this,” Holmes said.

Argo amassed 274 yards rushing on 35 attempts. The Argonauts outgained the Meteors 368-90 and enjoyed a 23-6 advantage in first downs.

Rossberg said Holmes has worked hard off and found his love of football.

“You watch his cuts and vision and it all makes sense,” Rossberg said of Holmes’ running ability. “ … you could watch all his hard work pay off.”

Argo led 7-0 after the first quarter and 31-0 at halftime.

Javoris Cotton connected with Yusuf Saleh on a 17-yard TD toss in the third quarter and backup quarterback Jacob Vanallen scored on a 9-yard run late in the fourth quarter. Kacper Lobas drilled a 45-yard field goal.

De La Salle’s defense was led by Victor Lee, who finished with seven tackles and one pass breakup and Jeremiah Coleman, who recorded an interception.

Offensively, Phillip Seltzer had seven carries for 31 yards and three receptions for 52 yards. Quarterback Kaleb Navarro was 5-of-15 passing for 85 yards for the Meteors, who were limited to five yards rushing on 17 carries.
