The Red Stars had a rough outing on July 26 with a 1-0 setback to Chivas de Guadalajara in their second game of the NWSL X Lisa MX Femenil Summer Cup.
Chivas’s victory was the first by a LIGA MX team over an NWSL squad in Summer Cup play.
Gabriela Valenzuela scored in the 45th minute on a shot that got by goalie Sydney Schneider, who was making her first start at the NWSL level.
The Stars top goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher, is playing with the U.S. team at the Summer Olympics in Paris.
The Red Stars were scheduled to close the group round of the tournament July 31 on the road against the Washington Spirit.
Staab out for year
Samantha Staab, who has won Iron Woman status for playing in every regular season NWSL minute three times in her career, is out for the rest of the season in her first year with the Red Stars.
The defender suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a July 20 game against Gotham and was placed on the NWSL season-ending injury list.
Fire coming back
The Chicago Fire face Toluca F.C. at 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1 at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview in the second round of the Leagues Cup tournament.
The Fire dropped a 2-1 decision at Kansas City in the first round on Aug. 28. Georgios Koutsias got the Fire off on the right foot with a goal in the 22nd minute, but the Fire was stifled the rest of the way.
The Leagues Cup features Major League Soccer and LIGA MX teams in the Concacaf-sanctioned tournament, which will qualify the top three finishers to the Concacaf Champions Cup 2025. In 2023, MLS’ Inter Miami CF became the inaugural Leagues Cup champion.
The Fire, which played in Bridgeview from 2006-2019 before leaving for Soldier Field, also have MLS games scheduled at SeatGeek Stadium against D.C. United on Sept. 7 and Toronto on Sept. 28, due to scheduling conflicts on the lakefront.
