In a recent column I told you about stopping at the Community Dinner held on Tuesday evenings in the fieldhouse at Marquette Park. That particular night I sat next to an arborist for the Cook County Forest Preserves and he was kind enough to let me ask him about a concern I had with my magnolia tree. He told me it was not unusual this year and it was possible it could fix itself in a couple of weeks.

When it did not fix itself, I did what is now common practice and searched for advice online. I was taken to a YouTube video which suggested a concoction with dish soap as an ingredient that I could whip up at home to help it along. Sounded easy to make and it was.

I went crazy with the stuff, spraying it all over continually, I’d finish a batch and make another, but it didn’t help. What did happen was this: The first time it rained, bubbles started flying here and there all over the yard! (From the dish soap I presume) The harder it rained, the more bubbles it made. As the wind picked up, a little river of suds started to roll down toward the gangway.

While the picture I’m painting might be a bit of an exaggeration, I do have, at least for the time being, the cleanest sidewalk and brickwork in town.

Right after the bubble brigade, I got in touch with an arborist recommended by the Chicago Historic Bungalow Association. He has come out and treatment has begun. And, by the way, he never heard of the concoction I read about online.

Here’s something to remember when planning your travel route:  From now until late September, there will be lane closures on Kedzie Avenue from 51st to 63rd for street resurfacing and asphalt paving. Parking will be restricted during work hours and could cause traffic delays too.

And now back to 1964. When we left last a new restaurant was opening up at 63rd and Western, on the north side of the street just east of the corner. Joan F. was the first to identify the Golden Bell.

At this time in 1964, a couple was checking out at a grocery store at 84th and Kedzie. They asked the clerk for some garlic flakes. She left her station briefly to get the item which was in the rear of the store. When she returned, she checked out the couple’s purchases and they left.

Later the clerk discovered that an envelope containing $2,800 in cash and checks was missing from the shelf beneath her cash register. The clerk was able to describe the couple, the man being about 30 wearing a white short sleeve shirt and gray pants. The woman had silver hair wore a dark short sleeve dress and was missing three or four top teeth. The suspected couple were apprehended.

This store was at 84th and Kedzie for many years. Today’s question is: What was the name of the grocery store?
