From staff reports

A Chicago woman was charged last month with robbery in connection with an incident in May in the parking lot of the Jewel-Osco at 12803 S. Harlem Ave.

Police said Janae Banks, 26, was taken into custody on June 22 at a home in the 8800 block of South Indiana Avenue in Chicago.

Police said the arrest stemmed from an incident on May 26 at the Jewel store when they were called for a report of a battery.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a 77-year-old disabled veteran was volunteering in front of the store for a veterans organization when he observed a retail theft being committed. The veteran walked over to the suspect vehicle and took a picture of the offending vehicle’s license plate.

One of the suspects approached the victim, threw him to the ground and stole the victim’s phone before fleeing the scene.

Palos Heights police were able to identify the offending vehicle from license-plate reading cameras in town.  The offending vehicle was involved in previous police incidents in town in the prior month and investigators were able to observe the vehicle owner, identified as Banks, matched the description of the offender who robbed the veteran.

Cell phone data records obtained for Banks placed her on scene at the time of the robbery.

The   Cook   County   State’s   Attorney’s   Office   was   contacted   and   a   count   of   robbery   was approved.

She appeared at the Bridgeview Courthouse and was released pending her next court date.
