Summer is just a couple of weeks away and Worth Mayor Mary Werner reminds residents that there are plenty of activities to look forward to.
Werner mentioned during the Worth Village Board meeting Tuesday night that the outdoor market returns from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 11007 S. 76th Avenue.
Home-baked goods, tacos, hot dogs, and sloppy joes will be served. Many vendors will be at the market. The rain date will be Saturday, June 15.
The first Outdoor Music Fest will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at the new outdoor pavilion area at the Marrs-Meyer American Legion Post 991, 11001 S. Depot St.
The featured band for the first concert will be the Ray Gavin Band. The event is free and there is never any cover charge. Food and refreshments are available for purchase.
“Come to the concert and see the new pavilion,” Werner said.
Village Clerk Bonnie Price mentioned that Timothy Hofman requested that a block party be held on Nashville Avenue from 107th Street to 109th Street. The request was approved.
Price mentioned that Hofman had asked all the neighbors if they would be interested in a block party.
“That’s the way to do it,” said Trustee Brad Urban.
An ordinance approving a memorandum of understanding between the village and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives regarding reimbursement of village overtime expenses for participating in the Cook County Crime Gun Task Force.
“It’s a win-win for the village,” said Werner regarding the arrangement with the Worth Police Department and the Cook County Crime Gun Task Force. “They do get guns off the street and the village is reimbursed.”
“It’s a good thing,” added Urban.
An ordinance was passed authorizing the disposal of personal property at the Water’s Edge Golf Course. A new tycrop to maintain each hole at Water’s Edge was going to be purchased. The older model would be sold to another golf course, according to Trustee Laura Packwood, who heads the golf committee.
Packwood reminded the board that Friday, June 7, is women’s golf day. Participants can play for half price.
Father’s Day Best Ball Tournament will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday, June 16, at Water’s Edge. The entry fee is $150 for a two-person team. The event includes a golf cart, prizes, breakfast and pizzas.
Prizes will be given to golfers who get closest to the pin and longest drive contests. To register, call 708-671-1032 or go online at watersedgegolf.com.
Werner also reminded the board and residents that the ninth annual Worth FOP Lodge 143 Golf Outing will be held Saturday, June 22, at Water’s Edge.
Foursomes are still being accepted for the tournament. The mayor also said that sponsors are also being sought for the tournament.
Participants will also receive a gift bag, a trophy for the winning team, prizes for the longest drive, and a prize for the closest to the pin.
