Happy June, everyone! The month of June used to be the most popular month to get married. Surprisingly, the month with the most weddings nowadays is October. According to industry professionals, 14.9% of weddings in the U.S. take place in the spookiest month of the year. Coincidence? Who knows? Who can explain love? She loves me, she loves me not.

“Once you know that daisies usually have an odd number of petals, you can get anyone to love you.” (Michael and Ellen Kaplan from their book “Chances Are:  Adventures in Probability”).

My son, Joe, is the latest member of our large, extended family to get married. Here’s some good news. Joe and his beautiful wife Ellie are now expecting a baby. To life and to love!

Children are proof that life goes on. I hope our neighborhood children will be safe during the summer months when violent crimes increase from neighborhood gangs. The police can only do so much.  Our police district is one of the largest in the city. The referendum we voted on at the last election passed with 88% of the vote. Hopefully, the wheels are now in motion to split the existing district in two.

Are you looking for a fun activity for your kids? St. Mary Star of the Sea Church will be hosting its Skate Bike and Roll Day on Saturday, June 8 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Kids can ride their bikes, skates, skateboards and all non-motorized wheels around the south parking lot of the church, 6435 S. Kilbourn. There will be skateboarding lessons from 2 to 3 p.m.

The West Lawn Conservation Club planted trees all around the neighborhood with the Curie High School Gardening Club last week. The week before that, trees were planted around Richardson Middle School. Thanks to all volunteers! Our neighborhood is healthier and more beautiful because of your hard work.

The LOS Youth Center will be painting a mural on a wall next to West Lawn Branch Library, 4020 W. 63rd St., during the summer months. I look forward to seeing their progress and finished work of art.

Thank you to Envision Community Services for cleaning up the parking lot at West Lawn Park. This organization continues to make a difference in West Lawn and surrounding neighborhoods every single week with clean-ups, food give-a-ways, clothing drives and so much more.

I heard that the next business to try their luck at the corner of Cicero and Marquette Road is Taco Boom Food Truck. As you know, several fast-food places have tried to make a go of it at that extremely busy and trafficky corner. Taco Boom sells “cheesy, beefy Mexican street snacks,” according to a recent TV news report. Currently, there are two other Taco Booms: at 79th and Lawndale and 47th and Cicero.

Happy June Birthday wishes to the one and only John M. from the Calvary Senior Club. May the dear Lord bless you with a wonderful birthday and healthy year.
