At their April 15 board meeting, Summit Mayor Sergio Rodriguez and village officials presented Certificates of Accomplishment to boy and girl wrestlers from Summit School District 104.
Rodriguez read their accomplishments and called them up one-by-one to receive their certificates. They were given a standing ovation by those in attendance.
The girls competed is the IKWF 2024 Tournament. The team placed fourth overall in the state of Illinois.
The boys competed in the IESA 2024 State Tournament.
Rodriguez congratulated them all for representing School District 104 and the community.
After they were given their certificates, their coach, Joe Phelan, told the crowd about each of them and their accomplishments.
Yaili Fortiz was a Regional and Sectional champ and finished sixth in state; Gianna Dominguez placed third in Conference, was a Regional champ, Sectional champ and State qualifier; Joaquin Fortiz was undefeated in the season, a Conference champ, Regional champ, and State qualifier; Michael Starzyk was Conference champ, Regional champ, Sectional finalist and State qualifier; Skylar Arellano-Phipps was undefeated in the season, Conference champ, Regional champ, State qualifier, one match away from All State honors, and is the team captain; Ali Arellano-Phipps is a Conference finalist, Regional champ, Sectional champ, and third place in State.
Coach Phelan is a graduate of Argo High School and still lives in the area.
He started coaching wrestling in 1991 for the Badger wrestling club out of Argo. Today, the Badgers train out of Heritage Middle School.
“In 2019, I helped Heritage start an IESA program,” said Phelan. “This season the coach had to step down, so I took over. The club experienced its best season to date and hopes to build going forward.”
