From staff reports
Police are alerting the public to what appears to be a crew of burglars hitting businesses across the city.
A CPD alert noted 10 separate crimes. Three were committed against Southwest Side businesses on Friday, May 17:
- 7800 block of South Western at 12:11 a.m.
- 3300 block of West 79thStreet at 12:43 a.m.

In each case, burglars used a hammer or cinderblock to smash their way through a glass window, then steal a cash register and other items.
The burglars were described as 2-4 black boys or men wearing dark clothing, face masks and gloves, and driving a black Kia Soul, stolen and later recovered.
Those with useful information to share are asked to call Area 1 detectives at (312) 747-8384 and refer to crime pattern 24-CWP-027.

- Do not keep a large amount of cash in the register; have a drop box.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Have ample lighting inside and outside of business.
- Call 911 to report suspicious vehicles and persons.
- Establish a relationship with neighbors.
