As indicated by the full parking lot and adjoining parking spaces along Mann Drive, the Marquette Park Golf Course is open for the season. The unique, 36 par course with elevated trees, greens and fairways has long been a pretty cool attraction in our neighborhood.

And, kids play free with a paying adult–any day, anytime. This applies to kids 17 and under, with one free kid accompanied by each paying adult. All rounds are based on space availability, walking only. To schedule tee times, call the clubhouse at (773) 526-5040.

The 117th Annual Solemn Novena to St. Rita of Cascia at the St. Rita Shrine, 7740 S. Western, began last week and continues every night at 7 p.m. until the Feast Day on Wednesday, May 22. On her Feast Day, an additional Mass with novena prayers will also be said beginning at 10 a.m. Both celebrations on that day will include the traditional distribution of roses. It is pretty awesome to realize that this event has been going on here at our shrine which began on 63rd and Claremont and now continues on 77th and Western for 117 years. People come back from all over for this special once-a-year devotion to the saint known as the Saint of the Impossible.

Over at Dan Ryan Woods, connect with nature as the Wednesday Bird Walks continue on May 22 and 29 from 8 to 9 a.m. Join a naturalist as the group explores this preserve while searching out local birds. Meet at the Visitor Center on the northeast corner of 87th and Western.

During the month of May, a daily Litany of Mary will be recited at Nativity BVM Church after the 8:30 a.m. weekday Masses and on Saturdays after the 4 p.m. Mass. All are invited to join.

St. Rita of Cascia Parish is planning a gardening party on Saturday, May 25 at St. Rita, 6245 S. Fairfield, and at St. Clare of Montefalco, 5443 S. Currently, the parish is looking for donations of roses, dahlias, hydrangeas, peonies, elephant ear bulbs, van zyverden, caladiums and lavender. Now back to 1979. Over at Quigley South, students were staging the musical Man of La Mancha. Maria High School students were performing in Wings, Feathers and Tales, a program dealing with birds, at the Field Museum. Ford City Mall was getting ready to open the Boat Show. Their door prizes were pretty big: a 1979 Johnson Outboard and a Mirrocraft 12-ft fishing boat, the latter furnished by Southwest Marine. Am I mistaken or wasn’t Southwest Marine around here somewhere?

When we left 1979 last week, we were headed to a place on 63rd Street right by the Marquette Theatre that we enjoyed stopping at for dinner on our way to the show on a Friday night. Debbie J. was the first to remember Mister Steer. Remember those days? Every steak dinner included a baked potato, salad and a hot roll and butter. They were celebrating their 8th anniversary; so had we stopped in this week, the sirloin steak dinner was just $2.99.

Speaking of anniversaries, in 1979 this local church was celebrating its 50th anniversary. This church, organized by a Czechoslovakian congregation, began at 52nd and Winchester, then moved to 5844 S. Rockwell in 1929 before moving to its Chicago Lawn location, What do you suppose is the name of the church?
