Mother’s Day happens on Sunday, May 12. If this isn’t something to celebrate, I don’t know what is. Motherhood means new life, new beginnings, new possibilities.
Even if you won’t be seeing your mom, you can still celebrate. Sadly, I heard about a movement to eliminate Mother’s Day because there are some people who feel it is unfair to women who do not have children and disrespectful to men who wish they were able to experience pregnancy and bear children. I don’t know what to say about that.
In my opinion, on Mother’s Day it doesn’t matter so much if you are a mother. The fact is, you have a mother. Everyone does. We can all celebrate. You are here because a woman gave birth to you. If you can’t honor your mother, be grateful for your life and celebrate that. Happy Mother’s Day!

The Hubbard High School Class of 2024 commencement ceremony will take place on May 24. Hubbard, 6200 S. Hamlin, is the only Chicago public high school located in West Lawn. The school ranks number 254 in the state of Illinois, as I mentioned in a previous column. Since then I found out that Hubbard has 1,819 students. Congratulations, 2024 graduates!
Have you walked or driven by St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, 3741 W. 62nd St., recently? The school is sporting a stylish new look, thanks to the freshly painted front doors. Their sports team, the Tigers, is painted in blue and yellow letters along with tiger paws, stylish designs and “Est. 1909” featured at bottom center. Looking great!
The West Lawn Conservation Club members work hard to improve the looks and health of our neighborhood by planting flowers, shrubbery and trees. Last week the club was treated to a special presentation by Chris Riccardo from the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. This organization’s motto is “keeping public lands in public hands.” Their focus is to protect the flora and fauna living on public lands. The information shared at the presentation will be put to good use as the Conservation Club plants trees in West Lawn on Saturday, May 11. If you would like to participate in this event, it’s not too late to sign up. Send an email to westlawnconservationclub@gmail.com.
