A few new coaches are dotting the area high school athletic scene.
One of the more notable hires was Brother Rice bringing Al Perez aboard as the soccer coach.
Perez led Chicago Public League power Washington to a Class 2A state championship in 2013, a fourth-place finish in 2015 and a third-place finish in 2021. His teams have won 11 regional titles and six sectional crowns.
“I’m thrilled to join the Brother Rice family,” Perez stated in a press release. “It’s an honor to be a part of this community and I hope to be a catalyst for great things ahead in our soccer program.”
Former Back of the Yards head football coach Sheamus Murphy, who started that program before spending the last five seasons as the head coach at Eisenhower, has taken an assistant coaching job with Sandburg football. Murphy, a Sandburg graduate, will coach the Eagles’ tight ends and serve as Physical Education/Health/Drivers Education Division chairman at the Orland Park school.
Stagg took care of business hiring Allee Hernandez as girls basketball coach and Danielle Latorre as competitive dance coach.
Hernandez played high school basketball for Providence and college ball at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.
Latorre returns to the competitive dance team and previously guided the Chargers to an eighth-place finish in the Class 3A state meet, which is the best finish in program history.
