Goodbye April, hello May.
Our American Flag, the symbol of our country, should always be treated with respect. But after bearing Chicago’s brutal winters and hot blazing summers along with being in the windiest city, our flags may get tattered and torn.
There is actually a United States Flag Code which indicates how to treat our flags upon disposing in a dignified way. According to the code, the preferred method of disposal is by burning. But please, do not go starting a fire in your back yard.

If you have a flag that needs disposal, the Boy Scout Troop 475 is here to help you. The Scouts have placed flag retirement drop-off boxes at the 23rd Ward offices, both in Garfield Ridge, 6247 S. Archer, and West Lawn, 3954 W. 63rd St. The collection boxes will be available through June 16.
There will be a Chicago Lawn (8th) District Police Council Community meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 16 at West Lawn Park, 4233 W. 65th St. There will be a new commission update and a public discussion. A guest speaker, Jennifer Bagby, Deputy, Corporation Counsel Public Safety Division, will be present as well.
The Bureau of Detectives – Area One has issued a community alert for the 8th and 9th districts. There has been an increase in burglary related incidents during the month of April. The offenders claimed to be employees of the water department or home improvement workers. As always just to remind us all, please keep the perimeter of your property well lit, keep doors and windows secured and report suspicious activities. This is the big city, unfortunately crime is a part of it but we do our best to prevent it.
The St. Turibius Class of 1974 has final plans for its 50th anniversary reunion. The event will be held on Sunday, July 14. The festivities will start with an 11 a.m. Mass at St. Turibius. Thereafter a pizza party will be held at Angie’s Sports Bar, 8352 S. Pulaski. If anyone knows of alumni from that class, please ask them to contact me.
Happy Birthday to Fabiola Mejia-Montalto on the 2nd.
