A Country Club Hills man has been charged with aggravated identity theft after an elderly resident at a Palos Heights nursing home reported unauthorized charges on his bank account, police said.
According to the Palos Heights Police Department, the investigation began on March 12, when an elderly resident of Avantara Nursing Home, located in the 7800 block of College Drive, reported nearly $7,500 in fraudulent charges at various businesses in the southern suburbs. The victim had recently transferred to the facility from a nursing home in Hazel Crest, where he had lived for nearly a decade, police said.
Detectives reviewed surveillance footage from multiple businesses where the unauthorized transactions occurred and identified a single suspect making the purchases. With assistance from local law enforcement, investigators tentatively identified the suspect as a resident of Country Club Hills.
On March 14, police visited the assisted living facility in Hazel Crest, where staff confirmed the suspect’s identity as Demonte Williams, 33, the head of housekeeping at the facility, authorities said. Officers took Williams into custody at his workplace without incident.
During an interview, Williams admitted to using the victim’s bank card, which was still in his possession at the time of his arrest, police said.
Williams was formally charged with one count of aggravated identity theft, which applies to victims over the age of 60. He was processed and released on March 17 and appeared in court on March 18 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
