Crete Village Administrator Mike Smith said during the February 24 Board of Trustees meeting that work was set to begin this week on the Goose Creek culvert replacement under Sangamon Street.

Smith added Sangamon Street likely will be closed for the entire week. The closure will occur from Exchange Street to Naoma Drive.

Also in his report, he said the boilers went down in the village hall, and the building had been without hot water. Replacement boilers are being installed this week.

Smith noted that he continues to work with IDOT to get the corner gas station project moving, and Fire Services, Inc., has closed on property in the Crete Park of Commerce, and they plan to build a new building.

In other business, trustees moved to remove from the table the issue of accessory buildings and the requirement for concrete bases. A lengthy discussion took place about the merits of concrete and other acceptable bases. Trustee John Phelan will continue to work on modifications to the accessory structure ordinance, with the hopes of bringing a draft ordinance before the board in March or April.

In the clerk and trustee reports during that meeting:

  •  Clerk Deborah Bachert read a notice from Crete Masonic Lodge #763 that they will hold their spring pancake breakfast on March 2. The Polar Plunge, benefiting Special Olympics, was scheduled for March 1, with many village employees participating. She also said the village received notice Crete Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a candidate’s forum for the upcoming consolidated election on March 3, at 5 p.m. The village also received a request from Misericordia for their annual Candy Days fundraiser on April 25 and 26.
  • Trustee Mark Wiater shared a report from the State that showed Crete ranked seventh in the State for municipal funding of police pensions. The village is 88.8 percent funded on the police pension.
  • Trustee Holly Milburn told the board the recent creation of the State-required Police Sergeant’s list cost the village about $11,000. The list needs to be updated every three years. She also announced the Police Officer’s new hire list will be updated in late summer. The village will be accepting applications and performing the required testing at that time.
  • Also during the meeting, Elizabeth Oestmann was in the audience and was introduced to the board. She is the new employee hired to work in the front office. Trustee Wiater thanked the two front office employees for stepping up during the transition.

The board closed the regular session on the board meeting at 8:04 p.m. for the purpose of Review of Executive Session Minutes and Probable, Imminent, Pending Litigation. The board reopened the regular session at 9:08 p.m. No additional action was taken.
