A training, which will teach village administration employees how to process a permit and work with the public, unanimously was approved at the Monday, February 24, village board meeting.

The training, hosted by B & F at village hall, will be made available to several employees at village hall and also will allow trustees to sit in if they so choose.

Topics such as village ordinances and processing, along with other building department specifics will be covered for a cost of $5,000.

Another building department update to move the village code from 2015 to 2021 also was approved for $5,000. The state requires the upgrade and Administrator Nick Palmer and Trustee Gary Hudson said it’s smart to remain just a few years behind in code updates to allow for changes. The code updates will be completed by B & F and will be presented to the Building Committee first, as it will allow the committee to be abreast of changes and discuss the possibility of maintaining local control on certain codes.

An Administrative Oversight Committee meeting was held February 25 and discussed the preliminary budget. The committee consists of Trustees Gary Hudson, Shelley Marevka, and Julie Sluis. Sluis was not in attendance, but Village President Peter March and Trustee Todd Sandberg attended.

The budget will look a bit more conservative for Fiscal Year 2026 after the streetscape project. There will be a slight increase in fund balance and a transfer from the Business District Development Fund to the General Fund for repayment of the Streetscape project.

Total capital spending for FY 26 is $1,263,400 and $880,000 is slated for the Conrad Storm Sewer project, which is funded by ARPA grant money. Another $167,400 is budgeted for Crawford Street Paving, which is covered by motor fuel tax funds.

Some other notables were $50,000 for sidewalk improvements from the capital improvement fund, $25,000 for a downtown facade improvement program, and another $15,000 for a downtown directional sign from the Business District Development Fund.

Next step is for the budget to be presented to the board on March 10, with final approval at the March 24 board meeting.
